Founded in 1845, the original name was Sturgis Falls after a family that settled in the area. However, the name was changed a few years later to Cedar Falls for the proximity to the Cedar River. The Sturgis Falls Festival is a three-day event held each year in honor of the founding family. Cedar Falls was a milling and industrial center before the Civil War due to the availability of water power.
